As part of our Heart for Our Heroes initiative, we wanted to appreciate our local heroes serving on the front lines during this trying season. One such group are the taxi drivers at the airport, for whom business has slowed tremendously due to the COVID-19 situation.

Together with volunteers from organisations in the Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circles (IRCCs) such as Yio Chu Kang Chapel, Team Nila and the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations, our young volunteers packed and distributed 750 care packs to taxi drivers at Changi Airport as a way of encouraging them. Each pack contained food items, anti-bacterial personal hygiene products, refreshing herbal drinks and appreciation notes for the taxi drivers.

This event was a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth (MCCY), Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Changi Airport Group (CAG).

Local media caught wind of this initiative and it was featured on Channel 8 News. Mr Chen, 67, one of the taxi drivers who received the care pack, shared, “Though this may seem like a small act, it really warmed my heart and made the long wait in the queue for customers far less frustrating.”

Minister Baey Yam Keng, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Transport & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth joined the volunteers in giving out the care packs together. He thanked all the volunteers for taking time out to support the taxi drivers.

“I’m really happy to be part of this initiative to appreciate the taxi drivers serving tirelessly on the front lines during this COVID-19 period. I work in the transport industry so I see how many of my friends and colleagues work around the clock. Now, I get to do something to cheer them on! The taxi drivers were surprised to receive the care packs but were very touched and even took photos of them! I also find it very encouraging to see different religious and community organisations coming together with the same heart to love and encourage our frontline heroes!

This event was a success and we would like to thank all the partners we worked with!
